Serum creatinine is a single marker and can remain normal even when up to 50% of kidney function is lost. A complete KFT includes urea, creatinine, uric acid, and electrolytes — and when combined with an eGFR calculation, it gives a much more accurate picture of overall kidney health.

Microalbuminuria is the first detectable sign of diabetic kidney disease, appearing up to 10 years before protein shows up on a routine urine test. Early detection allows intervention with ACE inhibitors or ARBs to slow progression significantly.

Hypertensive patients should have a KFT and urine microalbumin checked at least once a year. If blood pressure is poorly controlled or if they are on medications like ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or diuretics, testing every 3–6 months is recommended.
